85 MAIN STREET
GARVAGH
BT51 5AB

Garvagh is situated in  Co. L'Derry,  31 miles east of Derry City and 10 miles south of  Coleraine.  Garvagh is located on the western edge of the Bann Valley close to the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains.  The town has a central location in relation to other towns, such as Ballmoney, Maghera, Coleraine and Dungiven are all just 10 miles distant, Limavady is 13 miles to the west and Kilrea is just 6 miles to the east.

Garvagh (meaning rough place) was established by Paul Canning when he acquired ownership of the townland in 1659.  The first building in the town was St. Paul's Parish Church, which has some interesting memorials.  A carved stone above  the church door bears the date 1670, although this was most likely a rebuild.
For a small  town there is quite a bit of history in and around it, which can be looked at in greater depth in a book called  "Garvagh's Hidden Treasures and Secret Places" .
The book was written by R.W. Patterson and can be purchased here in the Garvagh Community Building.
